Few things are more awkward than having lunch with someone you have very recently and mightily trounced.
President Barack Obama will host former rival Mitt Romney for a private lunch at the White House on Thursday, their first meeting since the election.
The meeting comes after Obama promised in his victory speech to engage with Romney following their campaign.
"In the weeks ahead, I also look forward to sitting down with Gov. Romney to talk about where we can work together to move this country forward," Obama said.
The men are expected to meet in the White House's private dining room, with no press coverage.
After such a bitter campaign, it is hard to imagine what the two men could possibly discuss over salad.
Beyond the obvious personal chitchat — "Campaigns are tough" and "Wow, we didn't really mean some of the nasty things we both said, did we?" & mdash; maybe the president wants to offer Mitt a cabinet position.
"I think the president should offer Mitt Romney secretary of commerce and say, 'You know business. We both believe that we want to have an export-driven recovery. The negotiations with China over a myriad of issues are tough, and I think you could bring some value to that and show a bipartisan spirit on some of the international economic issues that the commerce secretary deals with," hypothesized "Viewpoint" host Eliot Spitzer, adding, "'The only caveat is you have to let me use some of your homes as vacation spots when I have no place to go.'"
